Don't let a small in size and few words per page picture book trick you into thinking it's simple. Because of an Acorn by Lola M. Schaefer and Adam Schaefer is one of my favorite nonfiction picture book formats. An easy read with powerful images and thoughts packed with more information at the end. The visuals open up your mind and front load all the thinking needed for the last few pages. This book is about the Cumberland Plateau in the Appalachian Mountains in the southern United States. The book ends with detailed information about this area including concepts of an ecosystem, food chain, inhabitants, and understanding all the important work trees do for our environment. Suggestions are listed for the reader to help guide our own actions in helping trees and forest areas near any of us. I definitely feel this book is a call to action for readers everywhere.
